Week 29: A Look at This Past Week (+ what I’m reading and watching!)

I’ve been talking a lot this year about resetting my nervous system and I want to share with you 5 practices and habits that have been very helpful for me. These are the shifts I try to do whether I’m at home and having a regular week or even when I’m traveling, like when I was in Guatemala a few weeks ago. They have all impacted my life and are very simple.
I’m Resetting My Nervous System:
First, start your day with calm, not your phone. It’s really easy to automatically pick up your phone first thing, but instead I challenge you to pick up some books. I would like to do a study called You Learn the Truth and some kind of devotion. (Here are some of my favorite prayers, if you want some suggestions!)

Second, get outside. Walk, run, sit on your porch. Just soak up the sunlight.

Third, do activities that are calm – maybe even those that you consider “boring.” Things like crafts, puzzles, or reading fiction really relax your mind!

Fourth, I challenge you to have quiet places in your day. Maybe where you just drink tea and there is no noise. (No TV, no podcast, no radio. No noise!) Just a quiet little space. And when you drive, consider turning off all the noise and just drive in silence!

Then, fifth, take your supplements. I just started this supplement called Cortisol Calming by Veracity and it has all these things that help calm your body and help you sleep better.
When I started paying attention to doing things that calmed my cortisol it helped me a lot overall. I didn’t realize that my cortisol was connected to my weight, my sleep, and how I felt about my body.
If I am always in fight or flight mode my body cannot relax, recover, or function properly. So this Cortisol Calming supplement is packed with nutrients that will help you lower cortisol, feel relaxed, sleep better, and feel your best in your body.
I take 2 every night before bed and I can see the difference! Pair this supplement with these other lifestyle changes that help your cortisol for the best results!

Another thing that helped me reset my nervous system was changing the way I look at things. Many of you know that I love to follow politics. However, a few months ago, I unfollowed many of the sources I used to follow because I realized they were stealing my peace and making me feel bad.
Maybe you can communicate?? If so, I’ve found a source of news that keeps you informed without making you feel overwhelmed and unsatisfied – such a gift.
It’s called The Pour Over and it’s a weekday email that covers all the top stories. I also love that they include a Christ-centered perspective and encouragement woven throughout. And you can read their emails every day in five minutes or less and know what you need to know!
Best of all, it’s FREE! Go subscribe here to The Pour Over to keep up to date with current events without feeling overwhelmed!
Some highlights from My Week:

Silas asked if he could give the baby girl her bottle one day this week. Then I heard him on the couch reading a book to him! (And, yes, this guy rarely wears a shirt in the summer.)
Watching my older children pour so much love into this sweet girl just melts me. Little did I know that saying yes to foster care would mean yes to seeing them become cruel advocates for vulnerable children. It’s beautiful!
(If you’re new here, we help babysit three days a week for a single woman in our church who is raising children. It’s been a huge blessing to our family!)

I got to spend Wednesday morning with this group of women at the Funny Library Coffee Shop in Nashville (highly recommend!). We celebrated my friend Christine’s birthday!
I met all of these women through my coach Alli Worthington and I am so grateful for each of them. Little did I know when I prayed for a coach/mentor that God would not only answer that prayer but also provide me with a community of women who would become dear motivators and friends!
After all — this is your sign to stop waiting to be invited to gatherings and start building the life-giving friendship community you need ❤️

What I’m learning…
I’m currently reading Rooted in Wonder, Capable, Soul Care (this one was great!), and My Friends (I’m still not sure about this one – but I’m still reading it because it has good parts to it so far… but I don’t know what I’ll think when it’s finished! Have you read it?)
What I am watching….
Kierstyn and I have almost finished watching the latest season of America’s Sweethearts. I find it really interesting how much goes into bringing the DCC team. I also love how much they have acknowledged the Lord through the seasons and it has been a great foundation for many wonderful conversations with Kierstyn.
He and I have been watching All Creatures Great and Small (so far, I’m not into it as much as I am into When Calls the Heart but I’m only on season 2 so maybe it’ll grow on me!)
And Jesse and I watched season 4 of Special Forces: World’s Toughest Experiment.
