Dollar Shave Club Review (Trusted)

Looking for completely honest Dollar Shave Club reviews or wondering if it’s worth it? I have now been using Dollar Shave Club razors for a few years and below you will see my updated (and completely honest) thoughts! I think it’s a great way to save on razors – especially if you don’t like messing with store coupons.

A Shave Club Review That Made Me Try It

Years ago, I wrote a funny post about how I used a disposable razor without a handle to shave that week because I had left my razor in Dallas on a speaking trip and I was too cheap to buy a new razor when I could do it by just using the razor until the new razor arrived from Amazon (purchased with a free gift card from Swagbucks).

Many of you commented on that post and gave fun suggestions and funny money-saving confessions. (You can read some of those funny comments here.) Also, some of you left some great razor-saving tips and tricks!

One of the suggestions people gave us most often was to sign up Dollar Shave Club. I think almost all of us have heard of this program. A monthly subscription box service that sends you razor blades every month so you never run out of razors.

What Made Me Skeptical About Dollar Shave Club Razors

I was questioning the whole idea. I’m not really sure why? Maybe it’s because their ads are weird? Or maybe it’s because I’ve been spoiled by being able to get FREE razors for years – either through coupons and discounts (especially when I shop amazing CVS deals and Walgreens deals) or through Amazon with gift cards I’ve earned from Swagbucks. I didn’t see the point in paying for a program like this!

You see, for the first few years of our marriage, I always had an abundance of razors that I got for free by matching drug store coupons and discount programs. And when the drugstore deals became less and less, I realized that we are spoiled by using big disposable razors! The thought of going back to cheap was not really appealing.

Drugstore razor deals are less common now, but you can still get a good deal from time to time by pairing a coupon with a sales and/or drugstore discount. However, when the razor deals started to drop, I got Swagbucks and used the free gift cards I got there to cover the cost of the razors. I usually just bought quality razors that were still at a good price. (If I’m lucky, I’ll find a coupon that I can clip to save even more!)

So I didn’t look Dollar Shave Club without thinking, “Wow! I guess people will pay anything for a subscription box service! But really… who would PAY a monthly subscription to get razors in the mail??!”

Dollar Shave Club Reviews from readers

As you can imagine from my sarcastic attitude, I was very surprised that reader after reader after reader left comments with amazing reviews of Dollar Shave Club! Here are a few of those comments:

Summer said: “Have you considered Dollar Shave Club? I was very skeptical at first, but my husband and I LOVE IT. (We get between street razors and cartridges each month.) They will ship automatically, but you can change it from monthly to bi-monthly at any time! AND they email you a few days before your shipment changes. I’m on the program again.”

Another reader commented, “I don’t know how you haven’t experienced the wonder and joy of the Dollar Shave Club. I’m a daily shaver. I can’t even afford it. These razors are great (even the dollar blades) and you literally can’t beat the price.”

And Lindsay agreed: “We love Dollar Shave Club!! My husband and I use the same razor and each have their own handle and blade pack. We share refills and only order once a month. It’s economical and I love how I never ‘run out’ of refills.”

Really?!?! Apparently I was one of the few people who thought that getting razors in the mail was just a weird idea. 😉

Why I Decided To Try Dollar Shave Club Products

In the name of wanting to investigate this to see if it was really good and wanting to follow my own saying “don’t beat it ’til you try it,” I signed up for the Dollar Shave Club. Since it was only $8 a month (you can also get a trial set for $26.95 that includes 4 razors, a diamond grip, shaving butter, and a razor cover), I figured if I didn’t like it, I could cancel after a month or two and not be too out of pocket for my test!

And, since so many of you wanted a Dollar Shave Club review, I promised you an honest review – and I figured I should shell out a little money to try this out for 3 months and report back to you all with my honest thoughts.

How Does Dollar Shave Club Work?

To get started with Dollar Shave Club, you can sign up for their $26.95 Starter Set which includes a Club Series 6-Blade razor (2), a Classic 4-Blade razor (2), a diamond grip, shaving butter (3 oz), and a razor cover.

When you take advantage of this offer, you sign up for a Dollar Shave Club membership that will renew after the first month at the full price of the Club Series razor for $8/month with free shipping.

After the first month, be sure to go into your membership settings and select the razors you’d like to receive each month. You can choose to switch to a cheaper razor if you want to pay less per month.

There are no hidden fees. You can cancel your subscription at any time. Or you can change plans at any time. If you change plans, you will receive a new razor handle for free.

Pause your subscription or change your mailing frequency at any time. You can even get blades every month if you want!

When I first signed up, this $26.95 Starter Set offer wasn’t available, so I opted for the $8 box. If you’re interested, you can go here to watch my unboxing video where I talked more about my first box.

What Comes in a Regular Monthly Box

My first box included a razor handle, 4 razor cartridges, and extra samples/goodies. For the following months, you just get a pack with 4 razor blade cartridges every month + bathroom notes (which are sometimes a little crass). Sometimes they will include a small sample, too.

Is Dollar Shave Club Worth It?

I really surprised myself by liking Dollar Shave Club – and I find myself agreeing with all the great reviews of Dollar Shave Club! The razors hold and shave well.

One thing I have found is that the blades don’t hold as long as the brand blades do. As you know, I shave every day. Because I’m weird like that! 😉 And usually I would only need to replace the cartridge every 3 1/2 weeks or so.

I find myself wanting to replace my cartridge at the 2 1/2 week mark with Dollar Shave Club razors. But here’s the thing! Since I’m the only Dollar Shave Club user in my family, I never go through all four cartridges each month! I switched to all other monthly shipments as well making it a fraction of the price I was paying!

However, I will say that I switched to the more expensive 6-blade cartridges and found them to last much longer than the 4-blade cartridges. So if you shave a lot like I do and want your cartridges to last longer, you may want to go with the more expensive blades!

I’ve been using Dollar Shave Club for a few years now and I still love it!

Some Final Thoughts

One of Dollar Shave Club’s biggest selling points is that you don’t have to remember to order razors. They just show up at your doorstep at a lower price than what you would normally pay at the store.
