‘Click or Ticket’ Sweeps: Why Holiday Weekend Police Increase Seat Belt Enforcement Nationwide

If you’re driving this holiday weekend, there’s a good chance you’ll see lots of police cruisers parked on highways, extra traffic stops, and traffic lights flashing along busy travel routes. Across the country, law enforcement agencies are dramatically increasing seat belt use as part of the national “Click or Ticket” campaign that coincides with the Memorial Day drive.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s annual campaign runs from May 11 to May 31, 2026, with many states making high-visibility patrols especially during the holiday travel season. As millions of Americans hit the road this weekend, authorities say seat belt tightening has become a public safety priority because many accidents still involve unbuckled drivers and passengers. Here’s what you need to know as the celebrations continue this weekend.

Holiday Weekends Always Produce More Fatal Accidents

Memorial Day weekend marks the unofficial start of summer travel, which means highways fill up with tourists, family travelers, and long-distance drivers. Safety officials say increased traffic naturally increases the risk of accidents, especially when speeding, distracted driving, alcohol consumption and fatigue are involved.

Law enforcement agencies across California, North Carolina, Wisconsin, Mississippi, and several other states have already announced expanded patrols targeting seat belt violations this weekend. Officials stress that seat belts remain the simplest and most effective form of protection during serious collisions.

According to NHTSA, approximately 9,758 passenger car occupants who died in crashes in 2024 were not wearing seat belts. That figure alone explains why enforcement campaigns are more intense during the busy holiday season.

Many States Combine Seat Belt Enforcement with DUI Enforcement

“Click or Ticket” sweeps are often broader than just wearing a seat belt. On holiday weekends, police agencies often combine seat belt violations with aggressive DUI patrols, distracted driving enforcement, and speed enforcement.

California Highway Patrol officials have confirmed that their 2026 Memorial Day Holiday Enforcement Season includes targeted operations for distracted driving, impaired driving, and impaired riders across the state. The Mississippi Highway Patrol has similarly announced an increase in troopers across the state for the Memorial Day weekend due to an expected increase in traffic. Law enforcement leaders say these combined operations help increase visibility and deterrence during one of the most dangerous travel times of the year.

Seat Belt Use Is Growing Because Many People Still Refuse To Buckle Up

Despite decades of public safety campaigns, millions of Americans still routinely drive without seat belts. NHTSA data shows the national seat belt use rate to reach about 91% by 2024, which sounds encouraging at first glance. However, officials point out that the remaining percentage still represents millions of uninsured drivers and passengers across the country.

Young adults between the ages of 18 and 34 remain among the groups most likely to wear seat belts regularly, especially during overnight trips. Safety officials say some drivers are less careful on holiday weekends because they travel short distances between parties, beaches, camps, or family gatherings. Unfortunately, crash statistics show time and time again that serious accidents are more likely to happen close to home than during long highway trips.

Many Drivers Don’t Realize How Expensive Seat Belt Quotes Have Been

Some drivers still treat seat belt tickets as a minor inconvenience, but fines have quietly increased in several states. In Texas, adults can face fines of up to $200 for seat belt violations, while minor violations can be even more expensive. Some states add court costs, insurance coverage, and additional fines when children are improperly restrained inside vehicles.

During “Click or Ticket” campaigns, officers often focus on visible violations such as rear-facing shoulder belts, children without booster seats, or passengers sitting in back seats without restraints. Safety officials say many people mistakenly think that back seat passengers don’t need restraints, or that rear seat ejections during crashes are always fatal.

Enforcement Campaigns Redesigned to Change Long-Term Habits

Officials say the real goal behind “Click or Ticket” campaigns is long-term behavior change rather than short-term ticket revenue. The Governor’s Highway Safety Program reported that officers issued more than 4,700 citations during last year’s Memorial Day campaign for restraint-only violations. Transportation safety experts say enforcement campaigns are effective because they create strong awareness and public pressure about seat belt use.

The first “Click or Ticket” initiative found that states using high-visibility enforcement campaigns experienced significant increases in seat belt use rates over time. Safety messages also increasingly emphasize protecting children and family members rather than simply avoiding penalties. Authorities hope that the appearance of repeated compulsions eventually becomes automatic behavior instead of an afterthought.

Modern Vehicles Can’t Fully Protect Unbuckled Passengers

Some drivers take for granted new cars equipped with airbags, collision warnings, lane-keeping assist technology, and automatic braking systems that eliminate the need for seat belts. Security experts dismiss that idea. Airbags are designed specifically to work alongside seat belts rather than replacing them.

NHTSA warns that unrestrained passengers face significantly higher risks of ejection, serious injury, or death even in modern vehicles with advanced safety technology. California Highway Patrol data showed more than 13,000 crashes nationally involving people who were not restraining themselves between 2024 and 2025, resulting in more than 1,300 deaths. Safety officials say even low-speed crashes can be fatal if passengers are thrown from vehicles without restraints.

Fastening Your Seat Belt The Holidays Are All About Tickets

Law enforcement agencies are increasing their vigilance because holiday weekends always produce higher crashes associated with traffic jams, speed, distractions, alcohol use, and fatigue. While some drivers view wearing seat belts as excessive, safety officials point to thousands of preventable accidents involving seat belts every year. Modern automotive technology helps, but experts continue to insist that seat belts remain life-saving tools designed for drivers and passengers. As families head for vacations, beaches, and summer vacations, the message from transportation agencies remains simple: fasten your seatbelt before every trip, no matter how short the drive may seem.
