A Day in the Life of… Jack Egan, business development manager at PMS & Bankhall – Mortgage Strategy

My alarm went off at…
…7.30am on weekdays, later when I work from home. Either way, the day goes by quickly once it starts.
My typical day consists of…
…my role as BDM at PMS & Bankhall means that no two days look exactly the same.
A typical day starts with a commute, using time to catch up on industry news and mind map priorities. Once at the desk, I work closely with Claire Cherrington, DA’s distribution and proposition director, and the wider DA team, jointly shaping the strategy and delivery of our business.
What started as a happy accident has become something I’m passionate about
Other days are intensively considered, working with data, identifying opportunities for improvement and greater productivity not only for our business but also for our members, as well as building solutions.
Others are more strategic, focusing on long-term process evolution, innovation, and thinking about where the business needs to be in 12 or 24 months. Networking is a constant thread throughout and varies between building internal relationships or industry wide interactions, connecting the right people to drive the right results is at the core of what I do.
I wanted to work in mortgages because…
…with a change of direction. After working at KPMG, I wanted a change and, at the suggestion of a family friend, entered a sales role within financial services.
I spent two and a half years making that role my own. I’ve developed it from a vertical into something with real process and innovation at its core and real financial deliverables attached. From there, I was fortunate enough to meet Claire and transition into my current BDM role, which I have now been in for six months.
I am in a very fortunate position where the answer is rarely, ‘No’; almost always, ‘How can we help you get there?’
Looking back, what started as a happy accident has turned into something I really love. The mortgage and securitization industry is fragmented in a way that requires constant adjustment. The market feels soft right now, ready to be shaped by the next generation. As part of the Mortgage Strategy Next Gen 30 Under 30, I want to be a name associated with positive, future-proof change.
One thing that surprised me about my work is that…
…how far down the technology curve the industry can be, and, more importantly, how much opportunity that creates.
Relatively specific applications of accessible technology can have a big impact here. I am also struck by the size of the market; when you’re dealing with base points and small percentages, it’s easy to forget that even small improvements can create a real opportunity to improve results, increase efficiency and deliver better support for firms and clients alike.

The security gap is something that really worries me as well. The number of consumers who remain uninsured, and the real implications of that, financial and otherwise, is a challenge the industry needs to take seriously.
A misconception about my role is…
that I am simply a messenger passing information between the exec and the wider business.
In fact, I am here to provide clear, constructively challenged decisions, and find meaningful solutions that represent the interests of our advisors and members.
I have a real influence on the understanding of what we do. It’s about asking if there is a better way, and then building it.
The benefit of the job is…
…the freedom and support I have around me at Sesame Bankhall Group.
I am in a very fortunate position where the answer is rarely, “No”; almost always, “How can we help you get there?” I am very grateful to everyone who has supported me in that area.

My favorite work memory…
…latest DA conference for PMS & Bankhall. I was involved from the beginning to help shape the concept from the initial idea, drawing on the great foundations of our Sesame conference in March, and working with colleagues across the business to bring it to life.
The response was great, the energy on the day was great, and I came away really proud of what the team brought together.
To relax after work, I…
… can be found in the gym every day, without fail. Weight, cardio, and essential sauna and hydropool air down afterwards.
I play golf regularly, I love to travel, and I spend a lot of time with friends, family, and my girlfriend, which keeps me sane and really focused. That balance is everything and it is what allows me to show and give my best every day.
