Younger Generations May Be Aging Faster Than Their Parents, Researchers Say

New research suggests that some young adults may be biologically older than their actual age, with poor sleep and other lifestyle factors that may increase the risk of early-onset diseases, including certain cancers. AlessandroBiascioli/Shutterstock

Marking Biological clocks

Both studies used biological clocks, markers of aging, which analyze patterns of tiny chemical tags called epigenetic marks throughout the human genome to measure the gap between chronological and biological age.

What’s the Best Amount of Sleep?

Wen drew on a variety of biological data, incl medical imaging, organ-specific proteins, and molecules, to analyze the relationship between sleep duration and biological age. He found that people who slept 6.4 to 7.8 hours a day showed signs of aging less. Conversely, sleeping less than six hours or more than eight hours accelerated aging.

The Columbia study does not dispute that sleep duration alone causes organs to age faster or slower. Instead, it asserts that too much or too little sleep can be a sign of poor health.

Accelerated Aging and Early Onset Cancer

WashU researchers found that the larger the gap between biological and chronological age, the greater the risk of cancer. They also determined that accelerated aging in certain biological systems increases the risk of certain cancers. For the immune system, that means a higher risk of early-stage lung cancer. Similarly, fatty tissue that shows signs of rapid aging has been linked to early-onset colorectal cancer.

“Our main goal is to determine how modern environments are focused on the progression of cancer risk, to change prevention from broad recommendations to personalized interventions,” it said. Most People Who Get Cancer Are Young

“We don’t have a definitive answer to what’s causing the rise in early-stage cancers around the world, but studies like these help us piece together the big picture, showing that cancer can be influenced not just by changes within individual cells, but by broader changes that occur throughout the body,” said David Scott, PhD, director of Cancer Grand Challenges.

“If we can identify young people who are at high risk of cancer while they are still alive, we can focus on prevention strategies and early detection for people who will benefit most from early intervention,” Cao said.

Participants in the WashU study with the most advanced aging system had a 15% increased risk of early-onset solid cancer compared to those with the most advanced aging system.

Why Don’t We Sleep Better?

Doctors contacted by Saving Advice agreed that lifestyle changes, including better sleep, can bridge the gap between biological and chronological aging.

Jagdish Khubchandani, MBBS, PhD, a professor of public health at New Mexico State University, has noted the relationship between stress and accelerated aging.

His own 2019 study on sleep duration found that “overall, the prevalence of short sleep duration among American working adults increased significantly from 2010 to 2018 (30.9% in 2010 to 35.6% in 2018). They concluded that “About one-third of working adults in the United States do not get enough sleep. Probably those who work long hours, change shifts, or those who work under high stress.”

At the same time, he is quick to warn against neglecting other factors that may contribute to premature aging.

“As I say in my work, aging is complex, not fully understood, and influenced by many social, environmental, and biobehavioral factors,” Dr. Khubchandani told Saving Advice.

We Are What We Eat

Dr. Angi Sadeghi, MD, gastroenterologist and founder of the Institute of Plant-Based Medicine (IOPBM), sees food as the cause of many health problems, including insomnia.

“Food, what you eat, is one of the most important things to help prevent premature aging or accelerate aging,” said Dr. Sadeghi told Saving Advice.

“So, if you eat a diet high in fiber, lots of fruits and vegetables like the Mediterranean diet, telomere length increases with a plant-based diet and reduces inflammation, which is one of the best things you can do to prevent premature aging,” said Dr. Sadeghi.

Dr. Sadeghi sees what he calls the “obesity epidemic” as a contributing factor to sleep-related health issues.

“Being overweight can give you sleep disturbances, too,” he notes. “I’ve never seen patients so obese, and I think the obesity epidemic is causing an increase in all cancer risks.”

“Unlike the chronological age written on our passports, biological age has some wiggle room,” Dr. Pavyde told Saving Advice. “Research has shown limited improvement in these markers from simple lifestyle changes: healthy eating, regular exercise, good sleep, no alcohol, smoking cessation, stress control. You can’t turn back the clock completely, but you can slow it down and go back a little.
