Is A Dyson Fan Worth The Money? I tested it during the British Heatwave

The second hot spell is already being talked about, the fans are flying in the basket again, and I finally tested the cooling fan that everyone has been mentioning: the Dyson Cool AM07.

I’ve always been skeptical of Dyson fans.

Not because they don’t look attractive. They do it. Not because people don’t play with them. They do it. But because I couldn’t get my head around spending hundreds of pounds on something that was, in the end, still a fan.

For years, my go-to fan has been me Levoit tower fan. Until last week, I swore off it. I have recommended it to friends, family and anyone who has asked what to buy when the British summer just gets unbearable.

Then came last week’s heatwave and gave Dyson a fair test.

With forecasters warning that hot weather could return this summer, many families are already nervously buying cooling equipment. Every British heatwave seems to follow the same pattern: everyone says they’re going to deal with it, no one sleeps, and then the best fans start disappearing from the internet.

So we asked around. We wanted to know which fans rated true when air conditioning is not an option. Again and again, one answer kept coming back: Dyson cooling fan.

I tested the Dyson during last week’s heat wave

The timing could not have been better. Or worse, depending on how you look at it.

The house was hot, the bedrooms full and the usual tactic of opening the windows at night did nothing. I had my trusty Levoit fan ready, fully expecting to use the Dyson once or twice before going back to my old boss.

That didn’t happen.

By day two, I found myself reaching for the Dyson frequently.

This was a section I expected to be very close. It wasn’t like that.

Levoit is still a smart fan and, for the money, I still rate it highly. But Dyson felt more comfortable in the hot room. It didn’t feel harsh or abrasive. The air seemed to circulate around the place in a way that made the room comfortable to live in.

Best for the price: Honeywell QuietSet or Levoit

If you just need something affordable before the next heatwave hits, Dyson wouldn’t be an obvious choice.

A Honeywell QuietSet or Levoit tower fan is much easier to justify if your budget is tight. They are also reasonable options if you only use the fan for a few days each year.

That’s important, because not everyone can or should spend hundreds of pounds on fans.

Best for noise: Dyson or MeacoFan

This is where Dyson becomes very easy to understand.

A noisy fan is fine for ten minutes. It’s not good at 2 in the morning when the room is still hot and you’re trying to sleep.

The Dyson is surprisingly quiet, especially considering how strong the airflow is. The MeacoFan 1056P also has a solid reputation for quiet room cooling, so that’s another good option if sleep is a priority for you.

But the Dyson had the edge for me because it combines silence with that smooth, room-filling airflow.

Great for efficiency: most fans are cheap to run

One thing to keep in mind is that fans are generally much cheaper to run than portable air handling units.

Dyson is not trying to be an air con. It will not cool the room in the same way. But it also doesn’t come with the same power consumption, large ductwork or awkward setup that most portable air conditioners require.

For many people, a good fan is all about making hot days and muggy nights bearable without turning the house into a sparkling cooling tower.

Something no one can tell me about a Dyson fan

The biggest surprise wasn’t the design.

It wasn’t a lack of instruments.

It was not quiet at all.

It was that I completely stopped thinking about the fan.

With other fans, I often find myself adjusting the speed, changing the angle or moving closer to the airflow. With the Dyson, I just leave it running. The room felt comfortable without needing that direct blast of air.

That’s something that’s hard to explain until you use it in hot weather.

So, is the Dyson fan worth the money?

Before testing it, I would have said no.

After last week’s heatwave, I’m not sure anymore.

Final verdict: I finally understand the hype of Dyson fans

I went into this review expecting to say that Dyson was likable but unnecessary.

Instead, the heatwave made me change my mind.

Can I still recommend my Levoit fan? Definitely. It’s still a great buy and probably a smart choice for most budgets.

But if someone asked me which fan I would choose during another British heatwave, with money taken out of the equation, I would now choose Dyson.

It didn’t magically cool the room. But it made me feel cool, calm and relaxed during the hottest week of the year so far.

And when you’re trying to sleep in the middle of a sticky British heatwave, that just feels like a big deal.
