Stock news: Couche-Tard and BlackBerry post profits, impact of Metro Flags strike

The Laval, Que.-based company, which keeps its books in US dollars, said total revenue came in at $19.5 billion, up year-over-year from US$16.27 billion. The company says higher average fuel sales prices helped boost revenue during the period.

Couche-Tard said net sales and service revenue came in at $4.5 billion, up 7.7 percent from $4.19 billion.

The CEO of Couche-Tard, Alex Miller, says that the company’s strategy, which they presented in February, is adding momentum to its American business.

BlackBerry reports Q1 profit and revenue rise, raises full-year revenue guidance

Its first quarter numbers:

  • Advantage: $8.5 million (up from $1.9 million last year)
  • Net worth: $152.9 million (up from $121.7 million last year)

BlackBerry Ltd. reported a first-quarter profit of US$8.5 million, up from US$1.9 million in the same quarter last year, as revenue rose 26%.

The software company, which maintains its books in US dollars, also raised its full-year revenue outlook to between US$594 million and US$621 million, from an earlier forecast of between US$584 million and US$611 million. BlackBerry shares jumped 16% or C$2.05 to C$14.31 in trading on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

Revenue for the quarter reached US$152.9 million, up from US$121.7 million in the same quarter last year.

The company’s earnings reached one US cent per share in the three months ended May 31 compared to zero US cents per share a year earlier.

On an adjusted basis, BlackBerry says it earned four US cents per share in its latest quarter compared to adjusted earnings of two US cents per share a year ago.

Metro says ongoing strike in Laval, Que., will take a bite out of Q3 earnings

Metro Inc. says an ongoing strike at its fresh produce distribution center in Laval, Que. We weigh third quarter sales. The grocer said its adjusted earnings per share were between $1.22 and $1.27 in its third quarter, compared with $1.52 in the same quarter last year.

The retailer says same-store food sales in the first 14 weeks of the 16-week third quarter were down 1.5%, compared to the corresponding weeks last year.

The company has been adding costs from its emergency plan to keep fresh produce on store shelves as the strike continues. The company will report its third quarter earnings on Aug. 12.

Metro says the union rejected its most recent request submitted earlier this month. The union came back with a promise today, which the grocery store did not accept.

Metro’s Laval distribution center employs 550 workers and supplies fresh products to approximately 300 stores in Quebec.
