Biscuits and Sausage Gravy Recipe ($10 Family Dinner Idea)

We LOVE breakfast for dinner! And there is nothing more comforting, filling, and delicious than a big plate of biscuits and gravy. My college kids ask for this meal when they’re home on break – so it was on the menu this week.

Another great thing about biscuits and gravy is that they are very cheap! Sometimes I serve this dish with sides like scrambled eggs or steamed vegetables, but to be completely honest – no one really eats sides when I serve it. So feel free to add more if your family wants them, but mine likes seconds (and maybe even thirds!) of the biscuits and gravy.

I usually use ground venison seasoned with sausage (we buy our seasoning on Amazon) in this recipe. But regular sausages work great! I also found that mayonnaise biscuits are the quickest to make for this super easy dinner, but you can use any biscuit recipe you like best.

You can even use biscuits from a tin if you’re in an incredible hurry — but these Mayonnaise biscuits are the best so quickly!

Ingredients for homemade biscuits and gravy prepared at the table include flour, milk, sausage, butter, sour cream, baking powder, salt, pepper, and fresh rosemary.

Biscuits Ingredients:

  • 4 cups flour (Harris Teeter – $1.99 for 5lbs) – $0.40
  • 4 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 1 cup mayonnaise (Publix — we don’t use much mayonnaise, and I always wait to buy it until I can get it for free or almost free when I combine sales + coupons + discounts)
  • 1 1/2-2 cups milk (Aldi – $3.05 per gallon) – $0.35

Total biscuits: $0.75 (makes 24 biscuits)

Sausage Gravy Ingredients:

  • 1 lb ground sausage, cooked (I used ground venison sausage but this price is based on Aldi prices) — $3.49
  • 1 tablespoon butter (if combined with fat from sausages – I used 5 tablespoons of butter since I used very low fat venison) (Aldi – $0.85 per stick) – $0.53
  • 1/3 cup flour (Harris Teeter – $1.99 for 5lbs) – $0.03
  • 5 cups whole milk (or half and half) (Aldi – $3.05 for 1 gallon) – $0.96
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Spices as desired, such as thyme, rosemary or red pepper flakes (I used fresh rosemary from my herb garden)

Total Sausage Gravy: $5.01

How to make Biscuits and Sausage Gravy:

1. Follow the directions for making the biscuits here, or use the duplicate recipe on the card below.

2. In a large frying pan, cook the soup if you haven’t already. Remove the sausage from the pan, leaving some of the fat in the pan. Add 1 tablespoon of butter to the pan (or 5 tablespoons if you’re using venison sauce like I did) and stir until melted.

3. Make a roux by whisking in 1/3 cup of flour.

A thick biscuit gravy mixture that is simmered on the stove as it cooks on the stove.

4. Continue whisking 5 cups of milk slowly. Whisk until well combined and no lumps remain. Cook for a few minutes or until thick.

5. Season the cooked soup with salt and pepper to taste. Add other spices as you like or garnish with fresh herbs (I used rosemary).

6. Serve with warm biscuits!

  • 5 cups whole milk or half and half (Aldi – $3.05 for 1 gallon) — $0.96
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Season as you like such as thyme, rosemary or red pepper flakes (I used fresh rosemary from my herb garden)

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.

  • To make the biscuits, combine the flour, baking powder, and salt in a medium bowl.

  • Add mayonnaise and milk until it forms a soft dough.

  • Dust the counter with flour and roll out the dough. If the dough is too sticky, add more flour.

  • Roll or flatten the dough and cut out 24 biscuits using a biscuit cutter or a juice glass.

  • Place the biscuits on a baking sheet and bake for 12 minutes.

  • Meanwhile, in a large frying pan, cook the soup (if you haven’t already). Remove the sausage from the pan, leaving some of the fat in the pan. Add 1 tablespoon of butter to the pan (or 5 tablespoons if you’re using venison sauce like I did) and stir until melted.

  • Make a roux by adding 1/3 cup flour.

  • Continue whisking in 5 cups of whole milk a little at a time. Whisk until well combined and no lumps remain. Cook for a few minutes or until thick.

  • Season the cooked sausages with salt and pepper to taste. Add other spices as you like or garnish with fresh herbs (I used rosemary).

  • Serve with warm biscuits!
