Get the jump on the number of real estate agents who want to qualify before the changes – Real Estate Strategy

The number of sellers looking to qualify has grown ahead of the potential changes, with Rightmove property test bookings up 128% this year compared to last.

The property portal says the rise shows agents are looking to strengthen their credentials ahead of the government’s response to its consultation on housing reform, which includes proposals for mandatory qualifications for agents.

Consultation closed last year, with a roadmap for change expected in 2026.

Propertymark has also reported a 51% increase in demand for qualifications since April 2020, reflecting a long-term trend.

Different studies show that seven out of 10 real estate agents would prefer to work with a qualified agent, while more than 70% of tenants and landlords believe that agents should have formal qualifications.

Rightmove and Propertymark have launched new training routes covering both sales and property, leading to renowned courses including the Propertymark Level 3 Certificate in Estate Agency.

The move builds on Rightmove’s launch of the Level 3 Certificate for Estate and Letting Agents (CELA) in 2022, a dual qualification in real estate sales and real estate.

More than 10,500 agents have signed up to the course, which is included in Rightmove’s membership.

Rightmove’s head of education Jason Charles says: “Agents are being asked to address complex consumer expectations, and qualifications give them a practical way to demonstrate their expertise, build trust and differentiate their service.

“By making this training available through Rightmove membership, we help agents get ahead of any potential regulatory change and demonstrate the value of the expertise they already bring to every move.”

Propertymark chief executive Nathan Emerson says: “Working in the property industry is incredibly rewarding and fast-paced.

“It is an industry that is seeing great change and represents exciting opportunities for those already working in the industry and anyone considering doing so.

“As with any ambition in life, it’s even more important to move forward with a demonstrated knowledge and deep understanding, two attributes that consumers value and trust most when considering their property journey.

“Our understanding is that qualifications and representation of agents are very important and we look forward to working with Rightmove to improve efficiency through nationally recognized qualifications.”

Burns & Reid managing director Mike Taylor says: “We believe that expertise is really important.

“Full qualifications enhance our expertise, set us apart from many other agencies and underpin our commitment to excellence.

“Our goal is for all members of our team to be fully qualified, which gives our customers real confidence that they are dealing with experienced and trusted professionals.

“It also ensures that we are working in the same environment as solicitors and real estate advisers, delivering a high level of service throughout the buying and selling journey.”
